Gerald Leo: Helping SMEs transform through his broadcast interview

News   •   Oct 31, 2018 07:33 +08

Each week until October 31, 2018, we are shortlisting a local corporate figure from Singapore and Malaysia who has demonstrated excellence in a media appearance, in the Hong Bao Media Savvy Awards 2018.

When Gerald Leo appeared on MONEY FM 89.3 to release survey results on digitalisation and disruption, he did more than give small and medium enterprises pointers on how to go digital.

Beyond digital transformation, he also contributed unwittingly to the communications transformation we at Hong Bao Media are working towards.

Mr Leo is Director, Commercial Partners and Small Medium Enterprise Group at Microsoft Singapore, and in discussing what his company is doing to support SMEs, he demonstrated the sort of confidence and media savvy which all local business leaders should possess.

Scroll down to find out my reasons for nominating him in the category of Best Broadcast Interview, and listen for yourself by clicking on the link below.

The Hong Bao Media Savvy Awards 2018 resumes with our second round of nominations. At the same time, Hong Bao Media has launched the awards in Malaysia and fine-tuned the categories to:

  • Best Broadcast Interview, in association with Meltwater
  • Best Online Interview, in association with Shootsta
  • Best Conference Presentation, in association with Dianomi
  • Best Live Webcast, in association with The Streaming Company

We launched the Hong Bao Media Savvy Awards to recognise senior local leaders for their communications skills, and to showcase authentic and credible home-grown communicators.

These are shining examples for other local business leaders, and to build a culture of excellence in communication, to maximise the potential of Asian companies in the Asian Century.

  1. Numbers - Mr Leo's principal reason for being on the radio program was to announce results of a recent survey of SMEs. He revealed that 57% of about 1,000 respondents were aware of digital transformation, and 56% had adopted some transformation initiatives, but only 1-in-4 had had relative success in implementation. Surveys are probably the oldest trick in the book to get media coverage, precisely because they sound so incredibly factual and useful.
  2. Questions - Asking questions, even rhetorically, are a useful tool to win your listeners over. These questions don't necessarily need to be answered in real time, but they can be used to spur listeners into thinking. For example, what are the business outcomes they want to achieve, and how do they measure them? Listen to the interview here.
  3. Flagging - He executed this skill occasionally in his broadcast interview. Formulating key points like a bulleted list structures and highlights your points to achieve clarity. Were you able to pick them?

If you know Gerald Leo, share this article with him and congratulate him on being nominated for the Hong Bao Media Savvy Awards 2018.
